What planets are made of: Findings establish counterintuitive potential planet-forming materials

Apr. 24, 2013 ? A team of researchers led by Artem R. Oganov, a professor of theoretical crystallography in the Department of Geosciences, has made a startling prediction that challenges existing chemical models and current understanding of planetary interiors -- magnesium oxide, a major material in the formation of planets, can exist in several different compositions. The team's findings, "Novel stable compounds in the Mg-O system under high pressure," are published in the online edition of Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics. The existence of these compounds -- which are radically different from traditionally known or expected materials -- could have important implications.

"For decades it was believed that MgO is the only thermodynamically stable magnesium oxide, and it was widely believed to be one of the main materials of the interiors of the Earth and other planets," said Qiang Zhu, the lead author of this paper and a postdoctoral student in the Oganov laboratory.

"We have predicted that two new compounds, MgO2 and Mg3O2, become stable at pressures above one and five million atmospheres, respectively. This not only overturns standard chemical intuition but also implies that planets may be made of totally unexpected materials. We have predicted conditions (pressure, temperature, oxygen fugacity) necessary for stability of these new materials, and some planets, though probably not the Earth, may offer such conditions," added Oganov.

In addition to their general chemical interest, MgO2 and Mg3O2 might be important planet-forming minerals in deep interiors of some planets. Planets with these compounds would most likely be the size of Earth or larger.

The team explained how its paper predicted the structures in detail by analyzing the electronic structure and chemical bonding for these compounds. For example, Mg3O2 is forbidden within "textbook chemistry," where the Mg ions can only have charges "+2," O ions are "-2, and the only allowed compound is MgO. In the "oxygen-deficient" semiconductor Mg3O2, there are strong electronic concentrations in the "empty space" of the structure that play the role of negatively charged ions and stabilize this material. Curiously, magnesium becomes a d-element (i.e. a transition metal) under pressure, and this almost alchemical transformation is responsible for the existence of the "forbidden" compound Mg3O2.

The findings were made using unique methods of structure prediction, developed in the Oganov laboratory. "These methods have led to the discovery of many new phenomena and are used by a number of companies for systematically discovering novel materials on the computer -- a much cheaper route, compared to traditional experimental methods," said Zhu.

"It is known that MgO makes up about 10 percent of the volume of our planet, and on other planets this fraction can be larger. The road is now open for a systematic discovery of new unexpected planet-forming materials," concluded Oganov.

This work is funded by the National Science Foundation and DARPA.

Dortmund beats Real Madrid 4-1 in Champs League

DORTMUND, Germany (AP) ? Borussia Dortmund followed Bayern Munich's lead in upending a Spanish power.

Robert Lewandowski scored four goals to lead Dortmund over Real Madrid 4-1 Wednesday night in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal.

"It was a royal evening for us," Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Guendogan said, playing on "real," the Spanish word for "royal."

Bayern Munich routed Barcelona 4-0 a night earlier, making it likely Europe's top club competition will have an all-German final for the first time. The second legs of the total-goals series are in Spain next week, with the winners meeting at London's Wembley Stadium on May 25.

"We still have to go to Madrid. That won't be a stroll in the park," Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said.

Real Madrid, a nine-time winner, was favored against Dortmund, which won the Champions League for the only time in 1997.

Lewandowski opened the scoring in the eighth minute, only for Cristiano Ronaldo to tie the score with a tap-in in the 43rd after Gonzalo Higuain seized on Mats Hummels' weak backpass. It was Ronaldo's 50th Champions League goal, including 12 this season.

Lewandowski beat an offside trap in the 50th for his second goal, running onto Marco Reus' defense-splitting pass and tucking the ball past goalkeeper Diego Lopez. He made it 3-1 five minutes later when he eluded Pepe by dragging the ball back and scored from close range.

"The third goal was worth every cent ZDF and Sky give us," Klopp said, referring to broadcast networks.

Lewandowski converted a penalty kick in the 67th after Xabi Alonso shoved Reus in the back and was called for the foul.

"I'm very happy with the four goals, of course," Lewandowski said. "But we're not yet through. We have to stay as concentrated when we play in Madrid. Because up to now, we've only taken the first step."

Lewandowski became just the second player to score four or more goals in the Champions League knockout stage, joining Barcelona's Lionel Messi, who had four against Arsenal in 2010 and five against Bayer Leverkusen last year.

"I could see there was one team on the pitch that was much better than the other. The better team definitely won," Madrid coach Jose Mourinho said.

The second legs will be played in Madrid next Tuesday and in Barcelona the following day.

"In football everything is possible," Mourinho said. "Anything can happen next week.

Dortmund, the only unbeaten side remaining in the competition, is 6-0 at home. Madrid has lost its last six games in Germany.

Klopp credited Dortmund's fans, clad in the team's bee colors, for their support.

"Without this atmosphere this game would not have been possible," he said. "One hundred percent."

Just Sing It Raises $1M For Its iPhone Karaoke App, With Users Recording 500K Songs In Two Weeks

just sing itThe makers of Just Sing It have announced that they raised $1 million in funding. I wrote about the app when it launched earlier this month. At the time, CEO Alec Andronikov told me that his vision is to create a truly addictive social experience ? users don't just share karaoke performances, they actually play a game where they have to guess what the other person is singing, and they can win virtual coins that unlock additional content. Ultimately, he said he wants to use karaoke as the hook for a broader social platform.

(AP) ? Police say legions of officers and a small battery of water cannon are at France's National Assembly as lawmakers prepare for a final vote to legalize gay marriage.

Christophe Crepin, spokesman for the police union UNSA, says the extraordinary security is in place protectively for Tuesday's vote.

In recent weeks, violent attacks against gay couples have spiked and some legislators have received threats ? including one who got a gunpowder-filled envelope. One protest against gay marriage ended with some demonstrators fighting police and damaging cars along the Champs-Elysees avenue.

When President Francois Hollande promised to legalize gay marriage, it was seen as relatively uncontroversial. The issue has since rejuvenated the country's conservative movement and brought together the far right, the Catholic Church and many French families from the countryside.

Breaking news: US withdraws its proposal regarding the expansion ...

Morocco World News

New York, April 23, 2013

The United States has withdrawn its proposal to include a human rights monitoring organism in the Sahara after a fierce opposition from Morocco and the lobbying of other members of the Group of Friend of the UN Secretary General on the Western Sahara, trusted diplomatic sources told Morocco World News on Tuesday in New York. ?????

Diplomatic sources acquainted with the issue of the Sahara told MWN on Monday in New York ?there are positive signs indicating that the draft resolution proposed by the United States won?t be adopted as it was at first version?, adding that the members of the Security Council are keen on keeping the same consensus that marked the resolutions adopted in recent years on the issue.

The same source who attended the briefing presented by the UNSG Personal Envoy to the Sahara, Christopher Ross, to the 15-council members, added that the atmosphere of the briefing was rather positive and none of the council members mentioned the question of the human rights monitoring mechanism in the Sahara suggested in the first draft resolution presented by the United States.

He went on to say that the members of the council praised the progress accomplished by Morocco in terms of human rights in recent years.

??This is a missed opportunity and it?s disappointing to see the US retreat in the face of Moroccan overreaction,? said Philippe Bolopion, UN specialist for Human Rights Watch, which has lobbied for the rights mandate, was quoted by AFP as saying

? ?The compromise reached this year will not be sustainable unless Morocco allows UN rights experts to visit Western Sahara on a regular basis, and Algeria allows them to do the same in the Polisario-run camps around Tindouf,? he added.

Obama Praises Future Scientists at White House Science Fair

WASHINGTON?With the third annual White House Science Fair as his backdrop, Pres. Barack Obama announced plans Monday to recruit one million new science, technology, engineering and math mentors from the private and public sectors to inspire many more students to pursue advanced educations and careers in those fields. Saying he is taking an ?all-hands-on-deck approach? to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education, Obama said that in addition to recruiting an ?army of new teachers in these subject areas,? the country needs ?to give the millions of Americans who work in science and technology not only the kind of respect they deserve but also new ways to engage young people.? The administration said it hopes to make the new mentoring initiative, part of the White House?s Educate to Innovate campaign, as common among STEM professions as pro bono work is among legal firms. Ten education nonprofits and major technology companies, including SanDisk, Cognizant and Cisco Systems, have committed to become the founding members of a multiyear mentoring effort called US2020 that aims for 20 percent of each company?s workforce to commit to 20 hours a year to mentoring work by the year 2020. The 10 founding companies also pledged to provide?more than $2 million in private money to fund the program?s launch. Before announcing the new mentoring initiatives, Obama went booth to booth through the science fair, staged inside the White House as well as in the sunny but windy Jacqueline Kennedy Garden on the South Lawn. The student exhibits featured the innovative work of about 100 winners of national and regional science, technology, engineering and math competitions held throughout the country. Many of the projects were completed with the help of mentors and after-school programs offered by schools. Students, ranging in age from eight to 19, showed off projects that included?a cost-efficient method of transforming algae into biofuel by 2013 Intel Science Talent Search winner Sara Volz, 17, of Colorado Springs, Colo., as well as 16-year-old Jack Andraka?s breakthrough pancreatic cancer test that he developed after identifying a key protein, mesothelin, produced by pancreatic tumors. The discovery won Andraka, of Crownsville, Md., first place in the 2012 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. During his speech Obama mentioned that Andraka repeatedly requested space from research labs to pursue his experiments but was turned down nearly 200 times. ?Finally, with the help of some folks at Johns Hopkins, he got the research facilities that he needed, developed a pancreatic cancer test that is faster, cheaper and more sensitive than the test that came before it?which is not bad for a guy who is just barely old enough to drive.? Noting that Monday was also the 43rd Earth Day, Obama gave ?a special shout-out to all of the young people...who focused their attention on how to harness cleaner forms of energy and how to create more energy efficiency.? These inventions included a wind turbine small enough to mount on a roof, a bicycle-powered water decontamination system capable of filtering out Escherichia coli and other dangerous pathogens from contaminated water, and an inexpensive press capable of transforming biomass waste (like banana peels and peanut shells) into compressed cooking fuel to combat deforestation?the latter, a winner of the Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge. Kiona Elliott, 18, of Oakland Park, Fla., said her group?s pedal-power project was inspired by a fellow student who told them about the water contamination crisis she saw as a volunteer in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. ?We live in Florida and we have hurricanes here all the time,? Elliott said. Because big storms are often accompanied by power outages, they decided their system should be powered manually. Obama seemed particularly charmed by the ?COOL Pads? designed by the three youngest exhibitors who were the Grade K?3 Regional Winners of the 2012 Toshiba and National Science Teachers Association ExploraVision competition. The boys? winning proposal used temperature sensors placed throughout football players? bodies that detect overheating and respond by activating ice packs in the ?COOL Pads? under the shoulder pads to prevent heat stroke. The prototype, designed by brothers Evan and Alec Jackson, 10 and eight respectively, and their friend Caleb Robinson, eight, all of McDonough, Ga., also included a wearable soft pouch of Gatorade and an extra long straw so players could hydrate without leaving the field. ?They can drink any flavor they want, and they don?t have to go to the sidelines for Gatorade,? said Evan Jackson. ?It would also be good for firefighters, hockey players, NASCAR racers and the military.? The boys admit that they don?t have the technological know-how quite yet to make a working version of their proposal?they?re only in the third and fourth grades?but luckily, at their age, all they needed was a really good idea and a prototype to win their competition. ?We hope to build it in 20 years,? Robinson said. During his remarks in the East Room later that afternoon, Obama made a point of mentioning the COOL Pads to wide receiver Victor Cruz of the New York Giants, who was in the audience as an invited guest, adding, ?It could work.? More importantly, Obama said, these kids are excited about science, and now the challenge is to mentor that interest. ?Think about that,? he said. ?If you?re inventing stuff when you?re in third grade, what are you going to do by the time you get to college?? Obama added that his goal is to ?reach a level of research and development that we haven?t seen since the height of the space race.? In the meantime, he said, the science fair is a reminder that the country needs to celebrate ?the outstanding contributions that scientists and engineers and mathematicians are providing to us every single day. And we want you to know that you?ve got a whole country behind you as you pursue your dreams. And your success is going to be our success as well.? Slower Apple Sales Crushed LG's Profits This Quarter - Business ...

Dan Frommer, Business Insider

SEOUL (Reuters) - LG Display Co Ltd reported its smallest profit since it returned to the black in the second quarter of last year, as demand for iPhone and iPad screens from Apple weakened amid concerns the U.S. company is losing its luster in the mobile device market.

Apple Inc, which analysts say provides about 30 percent of LG Display's revenue, is facing intensifying competition from Samsung and up-and-coming rivals. A disappointing forecast by a U.S. supplier to Apple last week heightened fears about slowing demand for the iPhone and iPad, pushing shares of Asian suppliers including LG Display sharply lower.

LG Display, which vies with Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's panel unit for the top position in LCD flat screens globally, made 151 billion won ($135 million) in operating profit in its January-March first quarter. That compared with the average forecast of a 147 billion won profit in a Thomson Reuters poll of analysts.

It was the South Korean company's fourth straight quarterly profit after seven straight quarters of losses, as makers of liquid crystal display panels have since curtailed output after about two years of oversupply.

The result was also a sharp improvement from a loss of 211 billion won a year earlier. But it was down 74 percent from the previous quarter, hurt by a seasonal slowdown in demand and by weaker sales to Apple, which is scheduled to report quarterly results on Tuesday.

Sales of tablet and smartphone panels, which are largely bought by Apple, accounted for 27 percent of LG Display's total screen shipments in the first quarter, down from 31 percent in the fourth quarter.

Jay Yoo, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities, estimated before the results announcement that LG Display's panel shipments for the iPhone 5 and the latest iPad had fallen 42 percent and 66 percent, respectively, from the prior quarter as Apple struggles with slowing sales growth.

On Tuesday, Apple is expected to report just an 8 percent increase in revenue for its fiscal second quarter, among the weakest showings in years, according to analysts' estimates.

Still, analysts see earnings for LG Display improving in the coming quarters as Apple is expected to introduce upgraded products later this year, and as demand for mobile device screens from affiliate LG Electronics Inc increases.

Samsung Securities analyst Harrison Cho expects Apple to introduce a less costly iPhone around July, helping LG Display improve its sales to Apple from June when initial parts shipments are expected to begin.

LG Display said on Monday that it expects panel shipments will rise by 5 percent to 10 percent in the second quarter from the previous quarter.

Shares in LG Display have fallen about 3 percent in the year to date, compared with a roughly 5 percent drop in the benchmark KOSPI index. The stock closed 2.2 percent higher prior to the results announcement.

Suspect charged in hospital with Boston Marathon bombing

By Scott Malone and Aaron Pressman

BOSTON (Reuters) - Prosecutors charged Dzhokhar Tsarnaev for the Boston Marathon bombings in an impromptu hearing on Monday in his hospital room, accusing him of crimes that could carry the death penalty if he is convicted.

Video taken by security cameras showed the 19-year-old ethnic Chechen placing a backpack near the finish line of the race one week ago, the criminal complaint said, alleging he acted in concert with his older brother, who was killed during a shootout with police early Friday.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured later that day after a massive manhunt and taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

The criminal complaint did not mention a motive for the bombings, leaving that as one of the mysteries of the investigation.

But a sworn FBI statement in support of the criminal complaint did reveal new details, such as the recollection of a man whose car was allegedly hijacked by the brothers while they tried to escape on Thursday night.

"Did you hear about the Boston explosion?" one of the brothers is said to have told the carjack victim. "I did that."

The brothers carried two backpacks containing pressure cooker bombs that ripped through the crowd near the finish line of the world renowned race, killing three people and wounding more than 200, the complaint said.

Ten people lost limbs from the bombs packed with nails and ball bearings. By Monday, Boston-area hospitals were still treating at least 48 people, with at least two listed in critical condition.

The charges were delivered on the same day Canadian police said they had thwarted an "al Qaeda-supported" plot to derail a passenger train. U.S. officials said the attack would have targeted a rail line between New York and Toronto, but Canadian police did not confirm that.

The 10-page complaint in the Boston case drew from investigators' review of a mass of video and still images captured by security cameras, the media and the public at the race before and after the bombing.

Thirty seconds before the first explosion, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev started fidgeting with his cellphone, the complaint said. After the blast, virtually everyone around him turned to look in that direction "in apparent bewilderment and alarm," while Dzhokhar Tsarnaev appeared calm, the complaint said.

He then left his backpack on the ground and walked away, the complaint said. About 10 seconds later the second explosion ripped through the crowd.

The charges were issued shortly before the city paused at 2:50 p.m. (1850 GMT) to mark the moment a week ago when the bombs exploded. A funeral was held for Krystle Campbell, a 29-year-old restaurant manager who was killed in the bombings, and a memorial service was planned for another victim, Chinese graduate student Lingzi Lu, 23.

An 8-year-old boy, Martin Richard, was also killed.

WOUNDED SUSPECT

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was wounded during at least one of two gun battles with police on Friday, suffering gunshot wounds to his head, neck, legs and hand, the complaint said.

He was mostly unable to speak due to a throat wound, managing to say "no" once in response to a question, according to a court transcript posted on the New York Times website. Mostly, he nodded in response to questions.

Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler found he was lucid and aware of the nature of the proceedings, the transcript said.

His capture capped a tense 26 hours after the FBI released the first pictures of the two bombing suspects, still unidentified, on Thursday.

Five hours after their faces were pictured on TV screens and websites around the world, the brothers shot and killed a university policeman, carjacked a Mercedes and sought to evade police by hurling more bombs at them during a shootout on the streets of a Boston suburb, police said.

Older brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was shot during a close-range exchange of gunfire with police and run over by his younger brother during his escape, police said. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev later abandoned the car and fled on foot, evading police for nearly 20 more hours until he was found hiding and bleeding in a boat.

Those extraordinary days captivated the United States and reminded people of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

"Although our investigation is ongoing, today's charges bring a successful end to a tragic week for the city of Boston, and for our country," U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement.

In choosing the civilian justice system, U.S. authorities opted against treating Tsarnaev, a naturalized U.S. citizen, as an enemy combatant.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, a legal U.S. resident, visited relatives in the volatile region of Chechnya for two days during his six-month trip out of the United States last year, his mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva and aunt, Patimat Suleimanova, told Reuters in Dagestan on Monday.

U.S. investigators were trying to piece together if he may have become radicalized and determine whether he became involved with or was influenced by Chechen separatists or Islamist extremists there.

That trip, combined with Russian interest in Tamerlan Tsarnaev communicated to U.S. authorities and an FBI interview of him in 2011, have raised questions whether danger signals were missed.

The Tsarnaev brothers emigrated to the United States a decade ago from Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim region in Russia's Caucasus. Their parents, who moved back to southern Russia some time ago, have said their sons were framed.

A grand jury was likely to charge Tsarnaev with more crimes, said former federal prosecutor and University of Notre Dame law professor Jimmy Gurul?, calling the prosecutors' complaint preliminary.

Sheriff: 5 snowboarders killed in Colo. avalanche

GEORGETOWN, Colo. (AP) ? Authorities have recovered the bodies of five snowboarders who were killed in a backcountry avalanche on Colorado's Loveland Pass.

Clear Creek County Sheriff Don Krueger said multiple search and rescue crews located the bodies Saturday. A sixth snowboarder was caught in the slide. That person's condition was unknown.

Krueger said authorities are pretty certain the snowboarders triggered the avalanche, which he said was about 600 yards wide and eight feet deep.

In cyber war game, Air Force cadets fend off NSA hackers

HANOVER, Maryland (Reuters) - A U.S. Air Force Academy team on Friday beat out rivals from other elite military colleges after a three-day simulated cyber "war" against hackers from the National Security Agency that is meant to teach future officers the importance of cybersecurity.

Nearly 60 government experts ? sitting under a black skull and crossbones flag ? worked around the clock this week to break into computer networks built by students at the Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine academies. Two military graduate schools also participated.

The annual Cyber Defense Exercise (CDX), now in its 13th year, gives students real world practice in fighting off a increasing barrage of cyber attacks aimed at U.S. computer networks by China, Russia and Iran, among others.

It also allows the NSA's top cyber experts and others from military reserves, National Guard units and other agencies hone their offensive skills at a time when the Pentagon is trying to pump up its arsenal of cyber weapons.

While the students sleep or catch up on other work, some of the NSA's "red cell" attackers use viruses, so-called "Trojan horses" and other malicious software to corrupt student-built networks or steal data ? in this case, long sets of numbers dreamt up by the officials coordinating the exercise.

But the job gets tougher every year, says Raphael Mudge, an Air Force reservist who develops software and training to protect private computer networks.

"It's challenging. The students are hungry to win," said Mudge. "It forces all of us to get better."

Army General Keith Alexander, who heads both the Pentagon's Cyber Command and the NSA, stopped by to see the "red cell" hackers in action at a Lockheed Martin Corp facility near NSA headquarters on Thursday, said spokeswoman Vanee Vines.

Alexander often speaks about the need to get more young people engaged in cybersecurity given the exponential growth in the number and intensity of attacks on U.S. networks.

The Pentagon's budget for cyber operations rose sharply in the fiscal 2014 request sent to Congress, reflecting heightened concerns about an estimated $400 billion in intellectual property stolen from U.S. computer networks in recent years.

Martin Carlisle said his 28-member team fought hard for first place after a hardware failure the first day. It was their fourth win in 13 years.

"Our nation is under attack. We need to train up a new generation of leaders," he said.

Shawn Turskey, a senior NSA official, said the goal was to raise awareness among future military commanders.

"The real payoff of this program is going to be seen 10, 15 years down the road when these individuals are admirals and generals," he said.

G20 gathers for debate on debt, monetary stimulus

By Jan Strupczewski and Anna Yukhananov

(Reuters) - Finance leaders of the G20 economies gathered on Friday to debate how best to rein in debt levels and the potential dangers from the latest round of aggressive easing of monetary policy from the world's biggest central banks.

They were also poised to demand swifter resolution to setting guidelines for financial benchmarks like the Libor interest rate in the wake of a global rate-rigging scandal.

But a rethinking of the austerity push among the world's biggest economies loomed as the biggest talking point. Advanced economies, particularly in Europe, have undertaken sharp austerity drives in recent years to curb growing debt, but those efforts have at times damaged economies already suffering from capital flight and under-investment from the private sector.

EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn told Reuters in an interview on Thursday that a period of reduced spending and borrowing was necessary to calm markets concerned about out-of-control debt levels, particularly in peripheral European countries. That time has passed, he said.

"Decisive action was taken. Now as we have restored the credibility in the short-term, that gives us the possibility of having a smoother path of fiscal adjustment in the medium-term," he said.

Among the topics finance officials from the G20 were debating was whether or not numerical targets should be set for debt reduction.

The United States and Japan have opposed committing to any targeted level of public debt, but Russia - this year's G20 chair - has hoped to secure an agreement on targets by the time G20 leaders meet in St. Petersburg in September.

Arriving for a second and final day of talks among G20 finance officials, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov told reporters on Friday that the discussion was revolving a "general goal" for deficit reduction rather a specific target.

"Colleagues said that if we make strict targets for fiscal consolidation, it reduces the room for maneuver for fiscal policy," he said. "I believe we will find a compromise about the formulation, that it should be a general goal we'll all be striving for, and not a strict parameter. ... All countries will have different ones."

In a 2010 study frequently cited by policymakers, Harvard professors Kenneth Rogoff and Carmen Reinhart found that on average, economies contract when the debt-to-GDP ratio surpasses 90 percent - a level G20 officials were discussing.

However, the study's results were disputed by researchers at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, who said growth for countries with those ratios was actually 2.2 percent.

The austerity argument has also been undercut by weakness in economies that undertook the most severe measures to cut deficits, including Britain, which is suffering its third recession in the last five years.

SPILLOVER CONCERNS

The unprecedented level of monetary stimulus designed to reinvigorate struggling large economies, including the United States, the euro zone and Japan, has raised concerns about excessive capital flight to developing nations.

In a communique on Thursday, the Group of 24 developing nations, whose ranks include Brazil, India, South Africa and Mexico, called on the advanced economies to "take into account the negative spillover effects ... of prolonged unconventional monetary policies including on inflation and the volatility of capital flows and commodity prices."

The Bank of Japan is attempting to end decades of stagnation by pumping $1.4 trillion into its economy, some of which is expected to find its way into emerging markets. Local currency funds have pulled in $16.7 billion in the first quarter of 2013 worldwide, the most in more than two years, according to Lipper, a unit of Thomson Reuters.

"There is a call from the G24 members to have clear coordination and better communication between advanced economies and emerging markets ... towards using coordination as a way to mitigate these potential asset appreciation bubbles. The consensus is that this is something that has to be closely monitored," said Mexican Finance Minister Luis Videgaray.

Videgaray has cause for concern.

In the days following the Bank of Japan's announcement, for example, the Mexican peso jumped 2.5 percent against the dollar to its strongest in 20 months. Against the yen, the peso surged over 9 percent.

But delegates to the gathering, including Siluanov, said the BOJ did not face criticism during a dinner meeting on Thursday. "Everyone was understanding about Japan's policies," Siluanov said. "After 15 years of deflation, 15 years of no growth, they need to kickstart" the economy.

Nevertheless, officials held to their previous line that the BOJ program must stick to domestic targets.

Jens Weidmann, president of Germany's Bundesbank central bank, said Japan should not use its monetary policy to manipulate exchange rates and set off a round of competitive devaluations.

The G20 finance ministers and central bankers are due to release their formal communique around midday on Friday. They plan to task the Financial Stability Board, a coordinating body of global financial regulators, with overseeing the reform of financial benchmarks such as Libor, two sources familiar with the situation told Reuters on Thursday.

An early draft of a communique G20 asks the FSB to take on the role after a global interest rate-rigging scandal that involved some of the world's largest banks.

The International Organization of Securities Commissions came out with a report this week saying that financial benchmarks should be based on actual transactions rather than estimates, such as is the case with Libor.

Scapegoating Internet Conspiracy Theorists Won't Fix The Media's Hype Machine

128146515_efcaf8c26aReporters have a nasty addiction to a particularly potent drug: the attention that comes from getting a scoop. Last night, during the live manhunt of the Boston marathon bombing suspects, we saw a lot of respected writers completely tweaking out on it. For lack of evidence, speculation began to swirl from the least reliable of sources: Internet conspiracy theorists. In the morning, when it became completely obvious that amateur sleuths on Reddit had falsely identified a missing Brown University student as the marathon terrorist, many pointed fingers at Reddit as “vigilantes.” Crowdsourcing detective work isn’t to blame; it’s the reporters and media outlets that gave unreliable sources a voice. The poor high school track student whose face was splashed on the front page of the New York Post is reportedly now holed up in his home, afraid to go outside. ?It?s the worst feeling that I can possibly feel. . . . I?m only 17,” he told ABC. The name of another “suspect,” a missing Brown University student, was haphazardly tossed around by the likes of NBC news reporter Luke Russert?on Twitter. Even though Russert was explicitly skeptical, that doesn’t stop moderately informed citizens from misinterpreting the whole ordeal: The unexpected infamy has caused the family of the missing student untold grief. “A tremendous and painful amount of attention has been cast on our Beloved Sunil Tripathi in the past twelve hours,” wrote a family member on a Facebook page dedicated to searching for the missing boy. Indeed, one of the top posts on Reddit yesterday was “Media Outlets, please stop making the images of potential suspects go viral, then blaming this small subreddit for it. And read the rules we’ve imposed before calling us ‘vigilantes’.” Continuing: “Until the media got involved, none of the images were going anywhere but to the FBI. Every single article on this subreddit so far reads like the writer took a glance at the front page then wrote an article about it, we explicitly have a list of rules to stop “witch hunts” … Edit: News outlets have spread images on TV & in papers of two male ‘suspects’ that they say the FBI is looking for, these have now gone viral. That media, is what a witch hunt is.” The FBI and Boston authorities made a nationwide plea to send tips, pictures and smartphone video into their hot line. It turned out to

Food poisonings up from raw milk, poultry bacteria

NEW YORK (AP) ? Bacteria commonly linked to raw milk and poultry is causing more and more food poisonings, health officials said Thursday.

Cases of campylobacter grew by 14 percent over the last five years, a government study found.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report was based on foodborne infections in only 10 states ? about 15 percent of the American population. But it is seen as a good indicator of food poisoning trends ? the CDC refers to it as "the nation's annual food safety report card."

Overall, food poisonings held fairly steady in recent years. There were no significant jumps in cases from most other food bugs, including salmonella and E. coli. But campylobacter rose, and last year accounted for more than a third of food poisoning illnesses in those states and about a 10th of the deaths.

Health officials said it's not clear why campylobacter cases have increased, or which food or foods was the source of most of the added illnesses.

The study had another piece of bad news: there were jumps in illness caused by a group of bacteria called vibrio, which are associated with shellfish. There were fewer than 200 vibrio cases reported last year, but that's a 43 percent increase from about five years ago.

The CDC report focused on only nine types of food germs, and counted only cases that were lab confirmed. Investigators tallied about 20,000 such cases and 68 deaths in those 10 states. It compared 2012 statistics to reports in the years 2006 through 2008.

Many illnesses never get reported. The CDC estimates that as many as 48 million Americans get sick from contaminated food each year.

Ravens-Broncos kicks off 2013

Denver Broncos v New England PatriotsGetty Images

Schedule-release day! It?s one of the sneaky-good pro football events of the year.

When I ponder the schedule, I look for clues for where a team may soar, wobble or plummet. The following 12 games all look like they could teach us something important about the teams on the field. I generally focused on games earlier in the season than later; it?s tough enough to speculate on how a team could play in September, but projecting a team?s late-December form is even more challenging.

Here are 12 games that particularly interest me:

49ers at Seahawks (Sept. 15) ? Appointment viewing. End of story. To paraphrase Mike Mayock, put on the tape of Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick from the postseason. Just do it. I?ll be watching for many reasons, but mainly to see whether either West power looks significantly better than the other.

Giants at Panthers (Sept. 22) ??This is the sort of game the upstart Panthers will win if they are going anywhere. And it?s precisely the sort of game Tom Coughlin?s team pulls out when in top form.

Lions at Packers (Oct. 6) ??The Lions have the offensive might to give any defense fits and were a legitimate playoff entrant two years ago. Can they bounce back after a disappointing 2012 performance? This looks like a big class test for them.

Seahawks at Colts (Oct. 6) ??I love out-of-conference battles between two talented clubs. A win for either team is a real nice item to have on the r?sum?. The Seahawks are capable of winning in a tough venue, but the Colts were very, very tough at home a season go.

Redskins at Cowboys (Oct. 13) ? Dallas did not fare well in its first two tries against Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris.

Eagles at Buccaneers (Oct. 13) ? The Buccaneers had a strong run defense a season ago, and the Eagles? Chip Kelly-designed offense is talent- and potential-laden. This should be fun.

Ravens at Steelers (Oct. 20) ? For years, this has been one of the NFL?s compelling rivalries, and doesn?t figure to change in 2013, not with Baltimore the depending champion and Pittsburgh trying to regain its footing among the AFC elite.?The Steelers won in Baltimore last season, one of the highlights of a disappointing campaign.

Dolphins at Patriots (Oct. 27) ??Last year, the Bills were the chic pick to make a run at New England?s AFC East supremacy. This year, the Dolphins are the East sleeper. Can Miami live up to the hype? The Dolphins are likely to be underdogs in Foxborough; if that?s the case, how the Dolphins play may trump whether they win or lose, in my view. If the Dolphins give a strong Patriots team a game, it?s a good sign for Miami.

Colts at Texans (Nov. 3) ??For the Texans, getting to the playoffs doesn?t constitute great success anymore. For the Colts, a step backwards after a surprising 2012 season would be a big disappointment.

Chiefs at Broncos (Nov. 17) ??Who?s going to push Denver in the AFC West? Kansas City might have the best shot. Let?s see how the Chiefs measure up.

Saints at Falcons (Nov. 21) ? A weakened Saints team managed to split the season series in 2012. Now, Sean Payton is back, and New Orleans could be ready to seriously contend once again in the NFC South. With both teams again likely to field strong offenses, the play of the defenses could tell the tale.

Broncos at Patriots (Nov. 24) ? Including the playoffs, this is the fourth meeting between the teams in the last three seasons ? and Denver has had no good answers for New England?s powerful offense. The Patriots have won all three meetings, averaging 39 points in the victories. The Broncos have the ability to be strong contenders, but their problems with the Patriots can?t be overlooked.

Global shares, oil fall on growth concerns, gold rises

By Herbert Lash

NEW YORK (Reuters) - World equity markets and commodities fell on Wednesday as global growth concerns sparked by the International Monetary Fund overshadowed the recent prospect of central bank stimulus from Japan on top of U.S. monetary easing.

U.S. and European shares fell more than 1 percent after a dour report on car sales in Europe and after the IMF on Tuesday downgraded its global growth projections for this year and next.

But gold rose, bucking a fall in other commodities, after a slide to two-year lows this week lured Asian buyers. Sentiment was still severely shaken by the biggest two-day loss in 30 years.

Copper fell more than 3 percent, weighed by growth worries and a 10.3 percent decline in March of European car sales, a key source of metals demand. Defying earlier industry predictions of a second-half rebound, sales are headed for a sixth straight annual decline to a two-decade low.

Brent crude fell below $99 per barrel on the prospect of sluggish U.S. and Chinese fuel demand amid rising crude supplies in the United States.

The North Sea benchmark has lost nearly 6 percent over the past five sessions in a commodities rout triggered by data showing growth in China, the world's second-largest oil consumer, slowed unexpectedly in this year's first three months.

The benchmark S&P 500 index retreated from its second-best daily performance of the year after several disappointing earnings reports and the drop in commodities.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 145.44 points, or 0.99 percent, at 14,611.34. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 21.81 points, or 1.39 percent, at 1,552.76. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 57.88 points, or 1.77 percent, at 3,206.75.

First-quarter revenue at Yahoo Inc fell shy of expectations on declining Web traffic and falling advertising sales. Intel Corp said its current-quarter revenue would decline as much as 8 percent and trimmed its 2013 capital spending plans. Bank of America Corp said revenue fell.

MSCI's all-country world equity index, which tracks shares in 45 countries, dipped 1.2 percent to 355.65 points, reversing some of the previous day's sharp gains.

In Europe, the broad FTSEurofirst 300 index extended a three-day losing streak, falling 1.5 percent.

Brent crude shed $1.69 to $98.22, while U.S. crude slipped $1.40 to $88.31.

Bonds resumed their gains as world shares and industrial commodities responded to concern about economic growth.

"Whether against stocks or commodities, the demand for Treasuries remains firm," said Ian Lyngen, a senior government bond strategist at CRT Capital Group in Stamford, Connecticut.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 7/32 in price to yield 1.6967 percent.

The yen fell for a second straight day against the dollar and euro on expectations major developed and emerging economies will not voice strong concern over Japan's aggressive monetary easing that has triggered a sharp slide in its currency.

The dollar rose 0.21 percent to 97.72 yen, although it remained below the four-year high of 99.94 yen set on Reuters data last week.

The euro slid from a seven-week high against the dollar, tracking losses in European shares. The euro slipped 0.99 percent to $1.3045.

Spot gold prices rose $18.27 to $1,386.00 an ounce.

Google apps having issues today

Google Apps

If your Gmail account is acting up today, you're not alone. Scores or readers are experiencing issues. And Gmail's not the only product hit with a little wonk today. Google Drive is experiencing errors, as is the admin control panel. Google Docs, Spreadsheets and Presentations have also been added to today's list.

The good news is that it doesn't (yet) look like a blanket outage. Some folk shave problems, some don't. Google says the Gmail issues were affecting 0.007% percent of users.

Gmail and Google Drive are still in the "investigation" process. Google promises an update on the Google Apps Admin Control panel status later this morning.

Cyprus must approve ?400mn gold sale ? Finance Minister - RT News

Cypriot Finance Minister Haris Georgiades forecasts a sale of ?excess? Cypriot gold reserves ?during the next months?, but the Central Bank remains opposed.

The Finance Minister says he believes the government?s gold sale of ?400 million? ($525-million), of ?excess? gold reserves in order to secure 10 billion euro aid from Cyprus?s Troika of lenders, will materialize.

He told Bloomberg,?The exact details of it will be formulated in due course primarily by the board of the Central Bank,? adding, ?obviously it?s a big decision.?

Cypriot officials confirmed the plan last week, but the Central Bank has rejected the notion, and the Central Bank chief Panico Demetriades said? last week that the Cypriot government didn?t have the right to sell gold without his direct consent, and said he hadn?t been consulted on the sale.

?There is an issue and it?s actually a major issue,? Georgiades said about the sale.

?The government will do whatever is needed to ensure ?smooth and effective cooperation between all decision- making authorities,? he continued.

Georgiades did not elaborate on how much gold Cyprus might sell nor at what price, but it?s rumored they will sell 75% of their reserves. According to the World Gold Council, the Central Bank holds 13.9 metric tons.

A wrinkle in the Cypriot bail-out plan arose last week when a leaked document indicated the total cost of the bailout had risen to ?23bn, up from the original ?17bn estimate, leaving the beleaguered Cypriot government in a scramble to raise an additional ?6 billion ($7.85 billion). Most of the funds are expected to come from depositors in banks, but Cyprus also hatched a plan to sell about ?400 million ($525-million) worth of gold reserves.

The gold market took a catastrophic fall after the announcement, and in the past week has plunged more than $200 an ounce, breaking both the $1,500 and $1,400 thresholds, reaching a 30-year record low in just 2 days.

Morgan Stanley has cut its 2013 gold forecast by 16%, down to $1,487, as investors continue their selling frenzy.

The sell-off ?has all the hallmarks of panic-driven, stale long liquidation, stop-loss and capitulation selling in the face of a concerted short sale? Peter Richardson, a Morgan Stanley analyst, wrote in a report.

"In the case of the [Cypriot] gold, it's down to the board of the central bank. It's perfectly understandable.. They have the final say," said Georgiades.

Stanford's NovoEd Brings Collaboration And Group Learning To MOOCs To Help Fight Attrition

Screen shot 2013-04-15 at 12.36.02 PMWhat is it with Stanford professors and Massive Open Online Courses (a.k.a. MOOCs)? For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, two of the three most popular MOOCs -- Udacity and Coursera -- were both founded by Stanford professors. Then there's Class2Go, an open-source MOOC platform created by a team of Stanford engineers and professors, which recently "merged" with edX (the third member of that aforementioned MOOC trifecta) to help it create an open-source platform.
